TIME ZONES

UTC Converter

Convert a local date and time to UTC, or a UTC time to any local time zone, with the offset shown.

Local time and UTC

UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) is the reference every time zone is defined against. Local time is UTC plus that zone's current offset, which can change twice a year where daylight saving time applies. This tool converts in either direction: give it a local time and a zone to get UTC, or leave the zone on UTC to convert the other way.

The result always shows the UTC offset that was used, so you can see at a glance whether daylight saving time was in effect for the date you entered.

Why not just use an offset?

A fixed offset like +02:00 is only correct for one moment. A time zone name such as Europe/Paris carries the full history of daylight saving rules, so the same tool gives the right offset for a date in July and a date in January without you having to know which one applies.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert my local time to UTC?
Choose your local time zone, enter the date and time, and select Convert. The UTC result accounts for daylight saving time automatically.
How do I convert UTC to my local time?
Enter the UTC date and time with the time zone set to UTC, then read the local time shown for the zone you choose to compare against, or use the Timezone Converter for a full comparison view.
Does the offset change with daylight saving time?
Yes. The offset shown is calculated for the exact date you enter, so it reflects whichever rule (standard time or daylight saving time) applies on that date.
What is the difference between UTC and GMT?
UTC is the modern time standard used by computers; GMT is a time zone that, in practice, keeps the same clock time as UTC. The small technical difference (GMT is based on solar time, UTC on atomic clocks) does not affect everyday conversions.
